Amber Smith investigates ways to enjoy this merry holiday without wearing a leprechaun hat.
Every year on March 17, the Irish (and Irish-at-heart) celebrate St Patrick’s Day. For many people — and I’ll admit I lump myself as a uni student into this group — St Patty’s Day means stumbling down to your local Irish pub and getting “merry” on pints of Guinness and beer dyed with green food colouring while parading around in a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” leprechaun hat. But if green beer and novelty hats no longer strike you as endearing, we can help you out. This Top Ten list of craft beers — ya we’re doing a listicle — is sure to be a delicious choice on St Patty’s Day — no Irish luck required!
Brewery: SAUCE BREWING CO
Beer: MEGA HOP SAUCE DOUBLE IPA
This cheeky brew from Sauce Brewing in NSW is beautifully fruity.
With hints of melon, tropical fruits, grapefruit, citrus, resin and pine this Double IPA packs a big flavour!
Brewery: FOX HAT BREWING CO
Beer: RED PELT
If you like India Red Ale this is a must try. It starts with a dark toffee pour and has an awesome mix of well-balanced flavours from pine, hop, caramel toffee and malt that makes for a smooth, easy-to-drink beer.
Brewery: 4 PINES BREWING COMPANY
Beer: KELLER DOOR GRAPEFRUIT IPL
Seeing the Keller Door label is almost always a guarantee of a great brew and this Grapefruit IPL is no exception. Bold ruby red grapefruit, citrusy bitterness and sweet malt flavours make this a truly delicious, sessionable beer.
Brewery: MOON DOG BREWING
Beer: BEER CAN
By embracing the beer can, Moon Dog have gone where basically every other brewery has gone but we couldn’t be happier they’ve released their own delicious tinnie! If you’re into grapefruit, peach and a resinous bite you need to give this a try. We bet you can’t drink just one!
Brewery: BATCH BREWING CO
This is an interesting beer from Batch Brewing in Sydney’s inner west that’s definitely worth a taste for any craft beer lover.
It’s yeasty with intense raspberry sherbet flavours, a sour finish and oh-so delicious!
Brewery: HOPDOG BEERWORKS
Beer: SUPERBEAST 2016
Superbeast is a yearly release and it’s always very exciting for craft beer nerds. If you haven’t heard of it here’s what you need to know: heaps of malt, heaps of hops, heaps of booze. This 2016 Superbeast is a black barleywine. It’s an intense and interesting (and thick!) beer with notes of fruit, dates and raisins.
Brewery: MOUNTAIN GOAT BEER
Beer: PULPED FICTION BLOOD ORANGE IPA
This beer has a dark amber pour that hits you with a bold, sweet, citrus aroma and smack-you-over-the-face hop notes. You’ll want to try this one for the aroma alone!
Brewery: STOCKADE BREW CO
Beer: OLD MONEY IMPERIAL STOUT
This Imperial Stout has smooth and sweet flavours with velvety chocolate, caramel and spice notes and just a hint of smoky bitterness from the whiskey barrel-ageing process. If you’re looking for a good sipping beer to end your night with this is worth a try.
Brewery: SAUCE BREWING CO
Beer: SAUCY SAISON
We couldn’t help ourselves, we’ve added a second Sauce Brewing Co. beer to the list! This yeasty and sweet brew with zesty citrus fruits is wonderfully aromatic and definitely sessionable.
Brewery: TUATARA BREWING CO
Say goodbye to Sauvignon Blanc and hello to Sauvinova! This brew combines grapes, hops and gooseberry with wonderful toffee, apple, resin and caramelised orange aroma. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed!
